Practical guide
How to stop procrastinating by lowering the start threshold
Waiting for motivation keeps the negotiation open. Make the first action smaller, the distraction harder to reach, and the commitment short enough to begin.
The short answer
Describe an action under ten minutes, open only the required material, and work for 15 minutes. At the bell, deliberately stop or continue; the first success is starting with the task present.
Name the source of avoidance
The task may be vague, threatening, boring, or oversized. Write the sentence behind the resistance and translate it into a concrete unknown. “I cannot do the report” may become “I do not know which figures belong in table one.”
Run the first-action protocol
Prepare the file, hide notifications, and permit an imperfect draft. A short timer is a limited contract, not a demand to finish the entire project.
- 1. Define the smallest visible result.
- 2. Remove one physical distraction.
- 3. Stay for 15 minutes.
- 4. Write the exact next action.
Example: an overdue proposal
Create the headings, paste known facts, and mark missing evidence. That skeleton converts an emotional project into separate questions. The next block can research one missing claim instead of confronting an undefined whole.
Be precise about body doubling
Body doubling means working in another person’s presence as a practical support. Some people report that it helps them begin, but direct evidence remains limited. Treat it as an optional accommodation, not a medical treatment or guaranteed effect.
